Cape Slot Coming to RIFT?

Last night on the PTS, players discovered a couple hints that seem to point to the addition of a cape slot. After last week’s mysterious delivery to PCGamer, this comes at quite a coincidental time, but RIFT players have been wanting a cape/cloak slot for a while now. It’s one of the few equipment slots Trion hasn’t added to the game yet, and one of the best things about capes is the fact that, well, not only do they make our characters look cool, they also serve as an easily-viewable customizable slot.

Capes add a fair chunk of personality to the appearance of our characters, especially in a game with a great wardrobe system already in place. The addition of capes would also open up the possibility of letting guilds create guild symbols, and making special guild capes for their members. Many MMOs have systems like this in place, and the concept of a similar system seems like it would fit well into RIFT, since the game’s guild system is already very customizable.

Slot

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s look at what players discovered on the PTS. There are two pieces of evidence at the time of writing this article. One of which is the fact that the word “Cape” appears on mouseover when you hover over the section of the equipment tab directly below the synergy crystal slot. To the right is a closer look at the slot as shown in the opening image.

There isn’t an actual empty square for the cape slot yet, which means it may very well just be a “tease” of some sorts, but there’s also the fact that since the equipment graphic doesn’t currently have empty space for new slots, a new graphic would need to be made. This, I assume, would take a bit more time. It isn’t quite as simple as when the seal and synergy crystal slots were added.

Wardrobe

As for the other hint, that’s found in the Wardrobe tab. It’s a new empty spot, directly below the boots slot. This one isn’t labeled, but it is clearly a spot for some new article of clothing that can be used in a cosmetic fashion. There’s even a little checkbox already in place next to it.

It’s pretty simple to pair these new additions together and assume both may very well be the starting stages to a new cape slot. It’s hard to say at this point, of course, when we’ll see actual capes from this, but it’s pretty awesome to see the beginning stages in place, when we haven’t exactly been given any sort of announcement regarding the addition of capes.

With any luck, E3, which is in June, may have some big announcements for lovers of flowing capes and cloaks and RIFT wardrobe connoisseurs everywhere. Hopefully they’re implemented well, and look awesome. Now, if we could just get some way to change our hairstyles and hair colors, too, we’d be set.
